The aims of the study were as follows
• Reduction of pollutants, originating from agricultural activities, petrochemical and heavy industries, domestic sewage effluents and landfills in the upper part of the basin. The sanitation plan is aimed, inter alia, at allowing development of sports and recreational activities on the banks of the river and adjacent areas.
• Development of the river banks and creation of water bodies by pumping of seawater to the upstream stretches of the river, involving preservation of the typical swampland flora and fauna, construction of lagoons, improvement of the river channel, rehabilitation of the countryside and restoration of the vegetative cover on both banks of the river.
• Utilization of the rehabilitated water body for sports and recreation, including: regulation of the river channel to permit its use for olympic rowing events; development of fishing piers inside the existing port, to serve for both tourist and recreational activities; changing the area's image in the eyes of both inhabitants and potential investors as a result of the above activities; promotion of economic activities, resulting in an increase in land value and creation of a metropolitan centre.
In order to achieve the basic objective of the project, various engineering alternatives were analyzed, and one based on an emergency outlet pipe (1.1 m dia., 6 km length) from the wastewater treatment plant, a pipe (0.7 m dia., 6.5 km length) for pumping of seawater to revitalize the river, and a standby system for emergencies, was selected.
The total investments in the project were estimated at about US$ 45 million. Scenic improvements included design of parks and vegetative cover for the river banks, the latter also serving for erosion control. The total costs of landscape rehabilitation along the river channel, landfill and fishing wharves are estimated at US$ 5.5 million. |
