Master Plan for Ben-Gurion Airport

Client: Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation Administr
Country: Israel
Project Information:

The project studied different runway alternatives based on the forecast growth of aviation traffic, and recommended using an “Open V” configuration in order to adequately serve the airport through the 1990s.

The study included the following:

• Review of existing airport configuration and its use of operational runways

• Forecast of increase in passenger and aircraft volumes up to year 2000

• Detailed analysis of 12 alternative runway configurations using existing runways and based on landing and take-off alternatives, future passenger growth, physical land constraints, ecological and environmental aspects and economics.

• Preparation of recommendations for operation and maintenance of runway, terminal and ancillary buildings.

Passenger traffic (arrivals plus departures) was forecast to increase as follows:

• International flights:

1975: Yearly – 2,860,000

Peak hour – 1,750

2000: Yearly – 21,120,000

Peak hour – 10,500

• Internal flights:

1975:Yearly – 600,000

Peak hour – 350

2000:Yearly – 6,500,000

Peak hour – 3,250

By year 2000 this would entail some 50 takeoffs and landings, requiring around 50 service gates.
